Part 45: Episode 3, Day 2, Trial: Hammer, Meet Nail

Music: Silence

That's odd - it was October 16th last update. For once the trial didn't start the next day I guess. But we just decided to not investigate anything at all for a whole day? I don't get it.

Sound: Gallery

Oh, good, Edgeworth again.

Sound: Gavel

Music: Trial

Well, here we go again.

You don't scare me, we already broke you once, we'll do it again!

That photo is our only tool so if it's a hammer then everything in this trial today better be a nail.

Very well. Mr. Edgeworth, your opening statement, please.

Mr. Will Powers, killed fellow actor Jack Hammer in Studio One of Global Studios.

It is impossible for anyone else to have committed this heinous crime.

The evidence presented during the trial will all point to this fact.

Edgeworth is probably too worried about his perfect record to prosecute this case if he's seen the photo, right? I can't wait to rub it in his face.

Hmm. I see.

Mr. Edgeworth, the prosecution may call its first witness.

Music: Silence

Uh, thanks for the blank stare?

Yes sir! I'll explain with the guidemap here.

Music: Logic and Trick

Here's the same map we saw earlier.

Where everyone was hanging out before the murder.

Complete with a shot of the scene and the suspicious grate.

Home of the old bag, I mean security lady.

Suspiciously quiet about what she was doing before 1:00 PM.

I don't think we ever really see this gate, but the point is that access to the studios is restricted by the security lady I guess?

In case you forgot what the path to the studios looks like. That second studio is going to come into play somehow, I just know it.

Continuing to ignore Studio Two.

Oddly little information for a crime scene investigation.

I counted four, but go on.

Sure.

Of course.

I was wondering if you were going to bring her up. She's kind of small, maybe she was the one in the costume and that's why the legs were dragging along the ground? (Apparently the costume design, as seen in the prologue, is supposed to have the ends of the legs dragging along the ground, so never mind.)

I guess the security lady doesn't count since she said she wasn't there until the afternoon. Even though we saw her there in the flashback scenes.

We get a nice animation showing the victim's movement to the crime scene.

At this point, no one is getting past the dragon guarding the gate.

Now, jump ahead to later that day... 5:00 PM.

The production staff came to Studio One to perform a rehearsal.

That'd probably be a shock, coming into work and seeing that. I think we need to talk to some of this production staff. Who actually found the body?

A hole in the chest, with no blood. A conceit for video game censors/courtesy? Or a clue?

No blood on the spear, either.

Music: Silence

Anyone like to hear that again?

Apparently that information is going to be important. Good thing I have it recorded, no need to see it all again. No, really, selecting "Listen again" literally just replays the entire scene as-is, including prompting again to see it another time. Pass.

(I think I can probably remember that...)

quote:

If you insist in seeing the whole scene again, there are a few lines to lead into the replay:

I'm sorry, could you describe that one more time?

I shoulda known it would be you, pal!

Fine. Once more for the mentally-challenged lawyer.

(Yeah, yeah. Live it up while you can, Gumshoe.)

From there we jump right back to looking at the map again.

How... medieval!

I think the judge is excited?

Sound: Select Jingle

Oh good, some evidence!

Your Honor.

And that question is:

Understood.

Let's call this security officer to the stand!

Music: Trial

Yup, there's the old bag. I don't have any follow-ups but our first blow is going to be great!

Will the witness declare her name?

...

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

...:what:

Sound: Light Bulb

Oh, right, she melts for authority figures.

I'm afraid I'm a bit flustered!

Sound: Shock 2

Well, that was quick. Guess Edgeworth is having bad luck with getting his witnesses to cooperate lately.

Sound: Whack

Sound: Stab

I do enjoy seeing her antics used on someone else.

This update is going to take forever at this rate, can we move this along?

Sound: Light Bulb

So, yes, her name really is Oldbag. And apparently she is not just an old bag, but a "windy" old bag. Touché, game.

Music: Trial

Edgeworth has to eventually interrupt Oldbag's rant by objecting to his own witness. Superb. Speaking of which, I owe you an "Objection!" callout with the soundbite linked, don't I?

Sound: Desk Slam

This trial has gone off the rails already.

The witness will refrain from rambling on the stand.

Perhaps we can get to the testimony?

Yessey I was.

You know your stuff, dearie!

...

You may begin your testimony.

Music: Silence

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

Poor old Hammer and the rest had been doing a run-through there since the morning.

I, well, I had some errands to run that morning.

Anyway, it was 1:00 when I got to the guard station.

I was at the main gate from then until 5:00!

Now, the murder happened at 2:30 PM, right?

Sound: Whack

Music: Silence

That lousy testimony didn't even give us any cool flashback images.

Very well. Let's begin the cross-examination. Mr. Wright?

Yes, Your Honor.

Sound: Testimony 2

Side note: I honestly thought the Witness Testimony and Cross-Examination were different sound effects. But they're both "Testimony 2". What is the plain "Testimony" sound effect for then? :iiam:

Music: Questioning - Moderato

On the day of the murder, I arrived at the guard station at 1:00 PM.

As usual, we'll start by pressing on everything.

Well, there wasn't a security guard at the gate, no.

But the main gate was locked, dearie.

So any employee could have gotten in? Although, wouldn't there typically be a record of cardkey usage, too?

(Right... the cardkey that I have.)

Sound: Realization

It still makes no narrative sense to repeat the testimony twice, but I do like the transitions from presses to the next line of testimony that we get during crosses.

Poor old Hammer and the rest had been doing a run-through there since the morning.

A "run-through"...?

They got the basics figured out by noon, and were to use the afternoon for practice.

Rehearsal was supposed to start at 5:00.

(Talk about a laid-back hero...)

Edgeworth is so irritated by Oldbag, it's wonderful.

I, well, I had some errands to run that morning.

What kind of "errands"?

Oh, well, you know.

Sound: Desk Slam

Answer the question!

Well, that was easy. I'm not sure how it will help us yet, though.

O-observing? Weren't you supposed to be at the guard station?

Sound: Whack

(I'm not sure your boss would see it that way...)

Anyway!

I always watch Hammer's run-throughs. Always!

Sound: Objection

You could quit being a spirit medium and take up guard duty.

Not a bad idea...

Anyway, it was 1:00 when I got to the guard station.

Did you see the victim then?

Did I see poor old Hammer? Nope.

So many holes in this timeline, but we have so little evidence about it.

Tell us what happened next.

I was at the main gate from then until 5:00!

Sound: Whack

Or are you criticizing how I do my job!? Whippersnapper!

Sound: Objection

Sound: Super Shock

"Snipperwhapper"...?

Old windbag is losing it, Nick.

We've barely started and Oldbag is already all over the place.

What did you see?

Now, the murder happened at 2:30 PM, right?

How did you know that?

He does like to show off his autopsy report.

I fed him some donuts and he talked and talked...

If you ask me, that detective isn't cut out for his job.
Sound: Realization

...

Interesting to me, because a certain man walked right by me at 2:00 PM.

2:00? You're sure?

Sure as spit!

Sound: Whack

Sound: Realization

...

It was Powers! That man right there, and he was heading toward the studio!

So you saw Mr. Powers?

That's what I said! Got wax in your ears, sonny?

Nick, this is your chance!

I don't know if you could get a bigger hint than that.

Sound: Whack

Another sign we've hit the right line on which to present something - pressing takes us back to the same line here. Anyway, once we reach the end of the testimony...

Nick...

Windbags love gossiping about other people's misfortunes.

Sound: Whoops

Anyway, no prizes for guessing this one. We only have one hammer and the game was kind enough to spotlight the nail for us.

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

Let me get this straight, old bag! Er, Ms. Oldbag!

:allears:

Music: Objection!

Sound: Light Bulb

Let me see that photo!

...

Sound: Desk Slam

Ms. Oldbag!

Sound: Realization

She, uh, took that more calmly than I expected.

Anyone can plainly see that's Powers! Right?

Sound: Stab

Edgeworth is less tranquil about it. Did we actually surprise him with the very first objection?

...

Great recovery.

True, Mr. Powers does play the role of the Steel Samurai!

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Drama Pound

Sound: Light Bulb

New face! We've cracked her composure for the first time! I'm not sure where we go from here, though...

I... I know that! I wasn't born yesterday!
Sound: Whack

(He's having trouble calling her "Oldbag" apparently...)

The name puns are often funny on their own, but the game script itself ragging on them is even better.

Humph! Nosy old man!

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Uh-oh, we might be in trouble here.
